Having a different set of genitals shouldn’t give anyone the right to keep you down from flying high and chasing your dreams. This is exactly the message that Neelam, the 31-years-old sarpanch of Chappar village in Jind, Haryana wants to send out. Neelam is the first woman sarpanch of her village and she is proud of the fact. She has a task in hand and a mission to bring back the freedom to women of her village. Her job is difficult. She manages a household after she is done managing the affairs of the village during the day, but she is not complaining. She loves to launch movements and initiatives which actualize the power of the community and give women equal participation. From awareness drives to employment opportunities, everything good is on her agenda and her vision is clear and simple. She wants to make women feel safe, secure and responsible in the world which is filled with prejudices and obstructions; these need to be shattered by people like her who aren’t afraid to stand up for their dreams and change the world. She has dreamt a dream for her village. Her vision is to make it cleaner, efficient and a lot friendlier to the senior citizens who have to run around for claiming their rights. Neelam has taken up a stand to end patriarchal traditions and give way to capable women to empower communities. When will we all do the same and stand by people like her?
