Thought Diwali is celebrated only in India? Well, Hindu communities all over the world celebrate the festival of lights with much pomp and enthusiasm. Take a look at what festivities are like in other countries and how similar (or different) they are to those in India.
Diwali celebrations in this island nation are restricted to the Little India district. To avoid noise pollution and ensure safety, crackers are banned and only sparklers are sold. Little India is lit up as people sample street food and visit nearby temples. Peacocks seem to be the mascot of Diwali as their images are seen everywhere.
Unlike its neighbor Singapore, Diwali celebrations in Malaysia mirror those in India as fireworks continue through the night and shadow puppet shows for children re-enact scenes from the Ramayana.
