10 Things Every Woman Must Learn Before Marriage

It might be 2014 but when it comes to marriage, a woman still lives in the 1950s. Utter the word wedding and pictures of a family, cooking, cleaning float before our eyes. But, no, it isn't cooking or cleaning. Nor is it about nodding your head and pleasing your MIL. A marriage is a union, a partnership between two people and the responsibility is not always his or hers, but shared. There are many things a modern man needs to do to ensure the union is equal. But then, there are certain things every woman must learn and understand before getting married, too. What exactly are they? Read on...

3. How to Say NO Diplomatically

No, we do not mean it in the extreme negative sense here. But a woman must know exactly when and how to say no in a marriage. It does not matter if your husband or in-laws are forcing you or emotionally blackmailing you. If you feel something is wrong, you must be able to state your opinion loud and clear. Also, once you get married, there will be a load of responsibilities thrust upon you and a thousand people you need to please. You can't please them all. You need to learn to politely put your foot down when people force you to start doing things. Things might not be drastic but small and simple things like cooking a full meal every evening. It might not be possible for you to cook a 3 course dinner post work as you're exhausted. But instead of downright refusing, you can perhaps ask your husband (or mom-in-law if you're staying together) to assist you. it'll help bond better and you can also catch up on each other's day! It's not about refusal to do things but it is about putting your foot down from doing the wrong things. Suppose your husband and family are asking for monetary assistance, don't reject them outright. If you have the means and the family really needs the money, help them. But if they are demanding dowry in the guise of assistance, you need to learn to say a firm no without further deteriorating the relationship.

But while you're getting ready to put your foot down, don't forget that every marriage is based on compromise and adjustment. Doing something you don't like to do to keep your family happy will go a long way in making relationships stronger. You might be uncomfortable in traditional dresses but if just during festivals or family functions, you dress in that saree your family gifted you, it'll be a gesture that won't be wasted.

4. Cooking the Basics

We aren't suggesting you go old school and cook a complete meal for your family twice a day with breakfast and snacks. But learning some kitchen basics will definitely help. Suppose it's just the two of you staying together and the maid goes on a week long leave, what will you do? You can't possibly eat out at a restaurant everyday or survive on Maggi. If you know how to cook just the basics, you can perhaps fix up a quick dal-chawal meal with your husband's assistance and be happy. Or imagine a scenario where your hubby is out of town for work and the maid decides to ditch too. Basic cooking skills or just quick-fix recipes can definitely come in handy. Also, try your hand at a gas-free recipe like a fun salad and your in-laws might just be impressed with your kitchen skills! Yes, in India, it does not matter where you come from, you will definitely be judged depending on your cooking by the family. Knowing just a little bit will help you not only save face but even make alone-times fun.
