Cars And Buses Are Being Set On Fire In Bengaluru As Garment Workers Fight New EPF


Protests by garment workers against the new norms for withdrawal of provident fund spread across the city on Tuesday. Police had to open fire in the air after protesters torched vehicles parked inside Hebbagodi police station on Hosur Road. Protesters also set on fire vehicles in Yeshwantpur in North Bengaluru. While on Monday, the protests were confined to Hosur Road, a prominent highway connecting Karnataka to Tamil Nadu in Southeast Bengaluru, on Tuesday all other major highways like Mysore Road, Tumkur Road, Bannerghatta Road and other parts of the city saw huge protests leading to long traffic jams.



At almost the same time, protests began gathering momentum in other parts of the city as well.

After the initial police action, situation was under control till 1pm. Later mobs started gathering near Hebbagodi, located around 20km from city. Once police started chasing them out, the mob started setting vehicles on fire. Police had to resort to firing in the air to quell protests.

Major companies located along these roads were also attacked by the protesters. Stones were pelted at vehicles parked in the campus of Biocon.

Police had deployed large forces along the major junctions of Hosur Road, where major protests took place on Monday. Around 9.30am, the protesters started pelting stones at cops at Begur cross and the Parapoana Agrahara central jail junction. Cops resorted to canning and many protesters were injured.

City police commissioner NS Megharikh said that additional forces have been deployed and the situation in the city was under control.
