Leopard Deaths Or Forest Department Apathy Which Is A Bigger Mystery

In a shocking development, the carcass of a dead male leopard was discovered nearly four weeks after its death near a forest guard checkpost at Badshapur in Gurgaon. Local residents who found the body were intrigued by the stench of the leopard's body yet, the officials who man the checkpost did not spot the scent! An official went on to claim that it was "confusing" as it "could have been any dead animal." The Aravalli hills have a significant leopard population.

Last month a mother with two cubs were spotted in Manesar.

“With large-scale deforestation, wildlife habitat has been destroyed and the animals are forced to intrude into residential areas and they get killed. It must stop. Instead of allowing mindless urbanisation, the government would do well to put in place a policy that allows for the co-existence of human beings and wildlife. At least, two to three per cent area in the region should be earmarked as sanctuary to protect the wildlife. It would also help in groundwater recharge addressing the problem of depleting groundwater,” environment analyst Chetan Agarwal remarked.
