This Man Provides Water To Over 200 Households In Drought-Hit Latur Everyday

While the ministers and leaders of Maharashtra’s BJP government are busy clicking selfies and wasting hundreds of litres of water in the construction of a helipad in drought-hit Latur, a Muslim man Sheikh Abdul Mateen is providing 8000-10000 litres of water to 150-200 households daily, from his borewell in the same region.

Mateen, who teaches maths in Surat Shah Wali Urdu school, resides in Aman Colony in India Nagar area in Latur. Long queues of people seeking water can be seen at his residence on a daily basis, as the parched city of Latur struggles to meet the demand for water.

Since the administration has imposed section 144 in the area, Mateen sits for 3-4 hours, between 4.00 and 8.00 PM each day, to avoid any kind of ruckus while distributing water.

A total of 27,723 villages, more than half of the approximately 43,000 villages in Maharashtra, have been declared drought-hit by the state government. The majority of these fall in the Vidharbha and Marathwada regions.
