This Startup Is Selling Tickets To Desi Weddings The One Experiences That Foreigners Can not Get Enough Of

The big fat Indian wedding is an unparalleled experience - 5 days of delicious food, sexy dresses, choreographed dance sequences, and A mix of wild frivolousness and solemn ceremony. Not every couple has the money to sponsor one, and not every person is lucky enough to have a desi friend to invite them to one. Like every quirky startup story, this makes it a perfect business opportunity of marrying demand and supply. Aussie startup JoinMyWedding lets users do just that - join weddings with a flat $300 fee around the world. Strategy consultant Márti Matécsa thought that Indian weddings were so appealing they could become a saleable commodity, after attending one in Tamil Nadu.

She discussed the idea with Australian entrepreneur Orsi Parkanyi, who supported this idea. “For cultural experiences, nothing equals a wedding, more so in India,” Parkanyi, told Hindustan Times.

They set up the platform with another collaborator in Mumbai. Today, couples can sell wedding tickets, and allow buyers to experience the desi wedding experience around the world.

While the couple gets paid guests (instead of the annoying freeloaders who give a token 500 Rupee' 'shagan"), Joinmywedding.com gets a 15% commission as a fee on ticket sales - much like BookMyShow, India's biggest ticketing portal.

“The concept of shared economy is gaining momentum and companies like Uber and Airbnb give us great hope that people are getting more and more open to share their goods and even their personal experiences,” Parkanyi told Businessworld .
