This Street Lamp Pretends To Be A Human Being To Draw Mosquitoes To Their Doom

University of Malaysia scientists seem to have taken cue from the Art of War - they're drawing mosquitoes into a trap by pretending to be an innocent, unarmed person.

To resolve one of the world's most pestilent problems, they've developed a street lamp that pretends to be a human. Of course, it's designed to mimic how mosquitoes differentiate humans (from a lamp, for example), and it produces low levels of carbon dioxide by combining ultraviolet light with titanium dioxide, emulate how a human smells. Attracted to this distinctive smell, mosquitoes are drawn, entering 'capture windows' where they are sucked in via a fan.

It would be poetic justice to have this device powered by mosquito blood, but the lamp is green and energy efficient, using wind and solar energy. It also work in flood situations, alerting search and rescue centres of dangerous water levels.
