Women's right activist Trupti Desai today entered the Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai at around 6 am. However, she only visited up to the area where women are already allowed and wasn't able to enter the inner sanctum. Desai was accompanied by a group of policemen and three members of her Bhumata Brigade, reported The Hindu. "I prayed that women be allowed to enter the inner sanctum as they were before 2011," she said after her visit. "We will try to visit the inner sanctum next time. This is a fight for gender equality", she added after coming out of the dargah, reported The Times of India.

After her successful campaign to end the ban on entry of women in Shani Shingnapur and Trimbakeshwar temples in Maharashtra, the Bhumata Brigade has been focussed on the Haji Ali Dargah. In April, Desai had launched the campaign ‘Haji Ali For All’ to allow women inside the tomb of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, reported the Hindustan Times.

Last month, the women's rights group had tried to storm the inner sanctum of the dargah, which ended in a scuffle. Haji Rafat Hussain, a local politician belonging to the AIMIM, had threatened to smear Desai's face with ink, while Shiv Sena leader Haji Arafat Shaikh had said that she would be hit with slippers if she tried to enter the dargah. However, this time around, Hussain seemed to have changed his tune.

While Desai stopped short of entering the inner sanctum this time, she has warned its trustees of protest in 15 days if women are not allowed inside. “We saw where we are allowed till and where men go till inside the dargah; in 15 days trustees should allow women in else we will protest,” she said, as reported by The Indian Express.
