Another Dead Whale Washes Ashore This Time In California. People Rush To Take Selfies Again

On Tuesday, a giant 40-foot long whale washed ashore dead at a popular California surfing beach. While authorities pondered over whether to push it back into the sea or tow it away in pieces in trucks, visitors soon began to flock the spot to click selfies and admire the animal. The overpowering stench did little to dissuade them. Standing upwind to avoid the rotting carcass's smell, people clicked selfies and wondered how the whale was nothing short of God's blessing. A resident of Santa Monica said, "You should be paying homage to such creatures that are so intelligent and so wonderful. You could start to feel the positive energy as you walked down the beach. Even though it's a carcass, it's profoundly positive - and anyone who went there is blessed." While this may put a positive spin to a very morose situation, on a larger level, it's more disturbing. This isn't an isolated incident. There has been an inexplicable rise in the number of whales washing ashore dead.

On several other occasions, dolphins have been wrested to their deaths, swans have been killed for selfies, and peacocks have fallen prey to feed human needs.

When will this end? Why is there such an acute lack of sensitivity in people that's forbidding them from understanding the gravity of the situation?

Firstly, animals are not one's personal property. People need to wake up and realise that there's a fine line between 'admiring' an animal and yanking it out of its habitat to drive it to its untimely death.

Secondly, there's something really weird happening around the world because the sudden spike in animal deaths is extremely worrying. Human intervention and climate change are factors enough without people trying to contribute their bit.

Humans, therefore, don't need any more hints - empathy coupled with gumption can go a long way in making the world a better place. Imagine if it had been the other way round? Sounds scary, dunnit?
