Deja Vu! New Zealand Beat India Just Like 2007, Will MS Dhonis Boys Bounce Back And Win The World T20 Again?

Before you jump the gun, here's a fact - the last time India lost to New Zealand in an ICC T20 event, they won that tournament nearly nine years back. We're talking about India's famous triumph in the 2007 World T20. The difference now is, not many gave India a chance back then and now they've been touted as the clear favourites.

Indian women set the tone for ICC World T20, crush Bangladesh by 72 runs in opener

Yes, just like in 2007, New Zealand were the better team. Today in the ICC World Twenty20 Super 10 opener, it was always India's game to lose once they had restricted the Kiwis to a modest 126 for 7 in 20 overs in Nagpur. Playing on a turning track, the Kiwis made tough choices by leaving out one of the world's best fast bowling duos in Tim Southee and Trent Boult. That move worked and how. 'India didn't have a plan to chase down the score and they failed to apply themselves,' were the words echoed by TV experts VVS Laxman and Wasim Akram after the match.

Skipper MS Dhoni, who top scored with a run-a-ball 30, too blamed the batsmen for the 47-run loss. "The batting let us down, the shot selection kept putting pressure on the next batsmen in. They exploited the conditions better, but we lacked adaptability and could have applied ourselves a little more," he said in the presentation ceremony.

The main reason why India were bowled out for 79 - their second lowest total in T20Is behind 74 vs Australia at the MCG in 2008 - was the spin of Nathan McCullum (2/15), Ish Sodhi (3/18) and Mitchell Santner (4/11). The trio gave away just 44 runs in 11 overs among them and took nine Indian wickets.

Yes India still remain winless over the Kiwis in T20 internationals but here's how they can still win this tournament. They won't play on rank turning tracks like they faced at the VCA Jamtha tonight, their batsmen will be well prepared to face spin and they will definitely not take any side lightly. Surely they will do better than just five boundaries (with one six in it) hit in the entire innings and just three batsmen getting to double digits. Plus, Indian bowling has been terrific this year in T20s and there's no reason why they can't continue their good form.

It will get better India, it will. So let's keep supporting them till the end, who knows it could be a repeat of 2007 and this loss today could just be the tonic they need in their title bid.
