Emergency services in New Delhi often struggle to cope with demand, often being too late and resulting in several casualties. This is because of heavy traffic and immobility of ambulances through crammed roads and narrow gullies. A trial has begun where auto rickshaws can serve as ambulances to get patients to hospitals and nursing homes quicker. Auto drivers are being offered INR 2000 as reward under the scheme which is set to start later this year.

Delhi's Health Minister, Satyendra Jain said that the reward was added because the drivers would lose work by being good Samaritans. Auto drivers will be given first aid kits as well as medical training to be better equipped.

It comes after the Supreme Court ruled that bystanders cannot be held responsible or later prosecuted if they help a victim.
