Gurdaspur Attack: 13 including SP Killed, 3 Terrorists Still Holed Up Inside Police Station


Two terrorists have been gunned down and three others are still holed up inside the police station in Dinanagar in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab. The terrorists dressed in Army uniform Monday morning went on a rampage attacking a bus, a health centre and a police station. Firing is still on. According to latest reports 13 people have been killed so far including Gurdaspur SP Baljit Singh, who succumbed to his injuries in a hospital. Soon after the attack an alert was sounded along the international border and Gurdaspur area which is the only gateway that connects J&K with rest of the country. Dinanagar borders Pathankot which has many key Army establishments. Hiranagar in Jammu and Kashmir, is about 85 km away from Gurdaspur. Meanwhile, as encounter is still going on in Gurdaspur, Pakistan Rangers in fresh ceasefire violation targeted border outposts in Jammu district of J&K along the international border. Pakistan Rangers resorted to small arms firing on BoPs along IB in Arnia sector of Jammu district, a BSF officer said. They opened fire on a moving bus, in which four passengers were injured, they said. They also targeted a community health centre adjacent Dinanagar police station, in which a policeman and three civilians including a woman who were present in the premises were killed.

Later, the gunmen entered the Dinanagar police station and opened fire on policemen there in which five policemen were seriously injured. They then targeted other part of the building where the families of police personnel reside.

It is said to be a well-planned attack which was intended to cause maximum damage. Five live bombs were found at a railway track not far from the Dinanagar police station. Search operations are on for any more live ammunition that might have been planted, a top police official has said. Rail traffic between Amritsar and Pathankot has been stopped.

The Pathankot highway has also been closed.
