Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana help India Women post 245/6 vs Sri Lanka Women in 1st ODI at Ranchi


Sri Lanka women won the toss and elected to field first, leaving India posing a target of 245 runs with fall of 6 wickets in 1st ODI at Ranchi. India Women posed a total of 245 for 6 which might have been far sighted for a moment, had it not been for Harmanpreet Kaur’s knock and Veda Krishnamurthy-Shikha Pandey’s 35-run stand for 7th wicket, against Sri Lanka in the first One-Day International (ODI) at Ranchi. Put in to bat, India started off well with Smriti Mandhana and Thirush Kamini adding as many as 71 runs for the first wicket, and Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur putting up strong performances for their side. For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhani and Shashikala Siriwardane claimed two wickets each and Ama Kanchana and Nilakshi de Silva claiming one each. By the end of the Indian innings, Shikha was also picked by Udeshika Siriwwardene, who returned with the figures of 8-0-31-2. India Women had their luck as every batswoman performed when it was her chance. Harmanpreet Kaur entered when India were 99/2 in 28 overs and she took India to a 200-plus total, giving hopes to her side for gaining some momentum back in the game. Sri Lanka Women bowled well to take six wickets, but could not prevent the Indians from reaching a daunting total. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to field first. Initially, Smriti Mandhana and Thirush Kamini gave a slow start to India moving on to 16 runs within first 4 overs. Eshani Lokusuriyage and Prasadani Weerakkody started the bowling attack for Sri Lanka though they were unlucky in take early wickets. Smriti went on to score a half-century leading India from front while Thirush could not provide the required support to Smriti for long and was shown the way out with Udeshika picking her first wicket of the innings for Sri Lanka. Indian captain Mithali Raj made way with an aim to finish the innings for India leading to 116 runs within 36 overs, where it was impossible for India to achieve a target of 250 runs in the next 14 overs. India were 143 in 40 overs with the hope to reach a target of 250 runs. India Women 245 for 6 in 50 overs (Smriti Mandhana 55, Mithali Raj 49, Harmanpreet Kaur 50; Udeshika Prabodhani 2 for 38, Shashikala Siriwardene 2 for 31) vs Sri Lanka Women.
