A Hilarious Story Of How The Change Of A Pen Altered The Look Of The Next Rajya Sabha Session

Elections aren’t won by strategies, promises and freebees. Sometimes a replacement of pen can do the trick. The voting for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana assembly became a laughing stock when somebody changed the pen during voting which did the Congress in and paved way for victory of two BJP backed candidates. As per Election Commission (EC) rules, MLAs are required to cast their vote using a pen with indigo ink provided by the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat, whose nib must be 1 mm in thickness. Votes marked by any other colour of ink are declared invalid. On Sunday after BJP MLAs cast their votes, 17 legislators of Congress came to cast their votes, but somebody intentionally or unintentionally changed the pen especially given by Election Commission and replaced it with a normal ink pen which resulted in rejection of votes of 14 Congress legislators out of 17.

Haryana had two MP seats for Rajyasabha and BJP fielded Chaudhary Birender Singh whereas Congress fielded lawyer RK Anand. Subash Chandra of Zee had filled nomination as an independent but with obvious support from BJP.

But as soon as BJP and INLD legislators finished their voting and Congress MLAs started voting, somebody replaced the pen given by EC with a normal pen. The Haryana Assembly has 90 members. Out of 90 votes, Birender Singh got 40 votes, Anand got 21 votes and Chandra got 15 votes while 14 votes were rejected.

Till here things were fine for Congress candidate Anand and he was certainly to get Rajya Sabha berth along with Chaudhary Birender Singh. But soon the jolt came and 14 out of the 17 votes of Congress legislators got rejected owing to the mistake of using wrong pen.

This changed the scenario altogether and according to new calculation Birender Singh needed 26 votes to win and since he had already secured 40 votes, the remaining balance of 14 votes were transferred to Chandra as BJP MLA’s marked him as second option.

Hence out of nowhere Chandra ended up with 29 votes resulting in crushing defeat of Congress hopeful. Although allegation have been made against former Haryana CM Bhupender Singh Hooda to deliberate plan this change of pen; but amidst the blame game Hooda has pleaded innocence.

Both INLD and other Congress leaders have accused to Hooda to treachery and working against the party fearing the CBI inquiry set up against him by BJP government in the state.
