How Deepak Malik Lost His Sight But Did Not Lose His Vision To Win The Cricket World Cup For India

In my village, everyone wants to be a champion, some in swimming, some in wrestling and some in gilli-danda. I, too, wanted to be a champion in cricket. Deepak Malik, born in Haryana's Bhainswal village, dreamt of playing cricket for the country, a dream that most of us have harboured as kids. However, things took a diabolical turn for him, one fine evening... It was the night of Diwali in 2004 and an 8-year-old Deepak lost his vision while bursting crackers. The accident took a toll on his state of mind and Deepak went into a shell and cut contact with everyone.

It's only after someone told him and his parents about Delhi's blind school that things started to get better.

"I realized there is still hope. The moment the cricket bat came in my hand, I felt like I had got a new life", says Malik

Once he started playing blind cricket, the runs started to flow for Deepak again and there was no looking back.

From representing his school to playing for the state and finally playing for the national team, Deepak's dream finally turned into reality. He holds the record for the fastest 50 in blind cricket, which came off just 17 balls against Sri Lanka!
