If You Are On A Train And Dont Have Cash Even Suresh Prabhu Cant Help You

Next time when you plan a long journey by Indian Railways remember you can tweet to Suresh Prabhu for help on everything from overpriced water to dirty windows and hungry orphans, you can't however, get the railway services to accept your card! He can't help you get some cash out of the in-station ATMs either because they just don't exist! According to Ministry of Railways (MoR) out of almost 7,000 (approx.) big and small railway stations across the country, mere 1287 stations have ATMs service available which accounts for only 18 percent of the railway stations.

According to the ministry, the installation of ATMs is subjected to the demand made by banks. “Installation of ATMs at a station is determined by the demand made by the banks and for assessing the same Zonal Railways have been authorized to invite tenders from the nationalized banks interested in establishing the ATMs at the stations from time to time,” reads the document of Railways Ministry accessed by Indiatimes.

Indian Railways is divided into 10 zones and not all zones have displayed the list of ATMs on the stations of their respective jurisdiction.

If PM Narendra Modi’s ‘Ache Din’ rhetoric or the continuous talks about much hyped bullet train fills one with hope; Indian Railways’ perennial lacklustre attitude towards the commuters is enough to break the hearts.

The Indian Government itself has admitted cashless is the way to go and is actually working towards making India a cashless economy by promoting use of cards for expenses. But the Indian railways has always done things differently!

While on the one hand it goes full steam in getting the bullet train up and running, on the other it's safety record continues to be appalling. On the one hand, it starts fast food delivery on its coaches, on the other it emerges it fails to even wash its blankets for up to two months. Railways has one of India's most visited website, but its also one of India's most bitched about websites.
