Indian Government Suspends Passport Of Loan Defaulter Vijay Mallya

The Indian External Affairs Ministry has suspended the diplomatic passport of business tycoon Vijya Mallya. The decision was taken on Friday at the request of the Enforcement Directorate. The move comes after Mallya, who is currently in the UK, failed to appear before the ED for questioning despite several notices.

Mallya was supposed to present himself before the ED's investigators in Mumbai on Saturday in connection with a money laundering probe in the more-than-Rs-900-crore IDBI loan fraud case.

He had fled India in March to avoid arrest over various cases filed against him over non-payment of loans by his now closed down airlines, Kingfisher.

The former liquor baron is facing legal proceedings for alleged default of loans worth over Rs 9,000 crores from various banks, and was last week directed by the Supreme Court to disclose by April 21 the total assets owned by him and his family in India and abroad.
