Kota Claims Yet Another Student Life 17-Year-Old IIT Aspirant Hangs Himself In Hostel

The pressure to perform in entrance exams has claimed yet another young victim in Rajasthan's Kota. 17-year-old Nirmal Yogi, from Sawai-Madhopur who ended his life on Tuesday was the latest name in a list which is growing at an alarming rate. Nirmal who came to Kota around two months ago was reportedly upset over the low marks he scored in the monthly test. He was found hanging from a fan in his hostel room. "Prima facie, it appeared that he committed suicide around midnight. His room was searched but we did not find any suicide note," station house officer Kaluram Verma said. The latest suicide comes days after the Kota District administration issued a set of guidelines for hostels in the city to prevent student deaths.

Nirmal is the seventh student to end his life in the city, often referred as the 'entrance coaching capital of India'. Last month a girl student from UP ended her life by jumping from her flat despite clearing the IIT-JEE, as she did not want to become an engineer.

The city on an average sees around 1.5 lakh students from across the country coming there for competitive exam coaching.

Most of the deaths have been blamed on the unbearable academic stress and pressure from their families to perform well in entrance exams.

With the growing number of deaths, Kota district collector Ravikumar had recently written an open letter to parents and students about pressuring students.
