Makarand Deshpande Is Not Satisfied With The Depiction Of Mental Disorders In Bollywood Films


Renowned theatre and film personality Makarand Deshpande, who has always been very picky about choosing films thinks that it is very important for a performer to be careful while choosing a project. He said, “I have never considered anything a setback. I have barely pushed myself (to do films) because I have been content with the work I do in theatre." He also thinks that the quality of film criticism in India is not up to the mark. He added,



“Film critics are here only to make their presence felt. That should not be the case. When it comes to film criticism, I feel the sense of responsibility is lacking somewhere. Sometimes, reviewers have no idea about the kind of effort that goes into making a film.”

Remember how Aamir Khan’s film Taare Zameen Par was successful in making Indian audience aware about dyslexia. While Bollywood films have time and again played a major role in spreading awareness about several medical disorders, Deshpande feels that Indian films have not done proper justice to just depictions. The 50-year-old actor, who will play a mentally-disturbed character in his upcoming film. Talking about Bollywood's depiction of mental disorders, he said,

“Bollywood hasn’t done a good job in its depiction of mental disorders. We have a habit of not showing people the real picture.”

Deshpande also thinks that Social media is not his cup of tea. He said, “the web is a matter of concern. Because of social media, everyone criticises everything in general. This is so alarming. Everybody wants to have an opinion about everything, and that’s not necessary. It adds to the disturbance.”
