Meet Meena A Woman Who Been Cooking For 350 Orphans Every Week For The Past 15 Years

Amidst the vast contrast between opulence and scarcity of Mumbai, you’d always find a few good Samaritans who thrive to restore the balance of humanity. Meena Manek, a housewife and a mother, is one such Mumbaikar who had reached out to the underprivileged children of the city 15 years ago and has been doing her job in silence ever since. The social media came to know about Manek’s work when she was featured in the Facebook page, Humans of Bombay and since then, appreciations have been pouring in from all over the country. Meena Manek had been feeding over 350 children from the orphanages of the city every weekend for the last 15 years. The reason behind her contribution to the society was not to gain recognition on social media after a decade and a half of her selfless work. The motivation came from a place where every mother draws her inspiration from – the smiles in the faces of her children. Awarded the “Adarsh Mata Pita”, along with her husband by Vishwamata Foundation, Pune on May 21, 2016, Manek realized that there were so many children who never had the fortune to eat food that they’d would love. Therefore, she decided to extend her kitchen to as many of these little ones as possible.

Here’s what Meena had to say about her story:

About 15 years ago, I visited an orphanage where my brother-in-law was distributing bread-butter to the children who were so grateful to try something different. I’ve always been a housewife who loves feeding my children everything they wish to eat and it pained me to know that these children weren’t getting to experience the excitement of eating their favorite dish.

Since then, every weekend I feed about 350 children from orphanages and the Blind School, whatever they wish to eat. I wake up at 4 am every Saturday and cook for them, as I would for my own children and this is the highlight of my life…I live for it. Just last weekend I made 50 kgs worth of mango ras for them and my God, you should have seen their faces! They were thrilled… and I can’t put into words how that made me feel– I was just so happy.

So, for Manek, it’s not just about feeding the hungry but also about feeding them with love.
