In what can invite further trouble for former IPL chief Lalit Modi, a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him in connection with money laundering case on Wednesday, August 5. The court had asked Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday, August 4, the reason behind not arresting Lalit Modi in the connection with the case. Special judge PR Bhavake, who heads the court handling cases under PMLA, had asked ED as reported in The Hindu, “You have the right to arrest. Why are you not arresting him.” ED lawyer Hiten Venegaonkar had then replied that a warrant was necessary to summon Modi for interrogation to take the investigation forward. The court cast doubts on its authority to issue a warrant in the absence of a complaint or charge sheet. The ED also said that Modi was “a potential accused” and urged the court to take into account his “conduct” since 2010, disregarding summons. “We have served summons on him through various means. We sent it to his last known address, Nirlon House at Worli, and to his e-mail address, from where it has not bounced back. So the accused has the knowledge of the summons. Since 2010, he has not complied with any summons. Sending a new notice would be a futile exercise,” Venegaonkar told the court, The Hindu reported. Modi was accused by former BCCI president, N Srinivasan of misappropriating funds when he was the IPL commissioner in 2010. Currently residing in the United Kingdom, Lalit Modi could soon face arrest to face the trial.
