Portugal Just Ran On 100% Renewable Energy For 5 Days Straight

In the 90s, Portugal was infamous for new massive coal-burning power plant - the World Wildlife Fund called it one of Europe's largest producers of CO2 emissions. In 2007, it was on the 2007 “Dirty 30” list. Cut to 2016, and Portugal has done an eco-facelift. This month, the entire country, across homes, offices, shops, streets - everything ran on renewable energy.

No coal, no petrol, all green

The country' solar, wind, and hydro power push, driven by a European Union directive which ordered member nations to produce a minimum 31% of their energy from renewable sources.

107 green hours

Portugal ran on clean, green energy from 6:45 AM Saturday, May 7 until 5:45 PM the following Wednesday. This is the month's second big green win. As of Sunday, May 8th 2016, around 1 pm, Germany was providing 55 GW (Gigawatts) of the 63 GW needed to run the country via renewable energy. That's about 87% of the country's electricity requirement powered from solar plants, windmills, hydro plants and biomass plants. The scene was so unreal, that instead of taking money for electricity consumption, people were actually getting paid to use electricity for several hours in the day!
