Rare Megamouth Shark Accidentally Caught In Japan By Fisherman Using A Net


A fisherman was left dumbfounded when he discovered what his net had captured - a 1,000 kg Megamouth shark. The extremely rare fish - that feeds on plankton - was swimming with its mouth open when it got got netted near Owase Port in Mie Prefecture, Japan.



The deep-sea dweller is habitual of rising higher up to feed, and otherwise stays 160m below the surface. However, it's so rare that since the 1970s, only 60 instances have been reported of its sighting.

The 5m long denizen has now reportedly been bought by a local fishmonger.
