Real-Life Superhero Lakhan Athya Guards Houses By Night And Teaches Street Children By Day

Why is it that when we want to do something for society or help the ones in need, we end up shoving the idea under the carpet citing all the reasons it's an impossible thing to do. It's like we mentally prepare ourselves for failure without even making the effort. I'm quite guilty of this too. I'd never hesitate before complaining, but talk about providing a solution, and I'd zip it. That's how hypocritical we are, and it's pretty shameful that we have admitted it. All the more reason why heroes like Lakhan Athya should be spoken about, helped and celebrated. Twenty-two-year-old Lakhan works as a security guard on a night-shift in Sector 50, Gurgaon. At the break of dawn, his shift gets over and he heads home to prepare himself for his day job - teaching the underprivileged children of Sector 57, Gurgaon. Doing it out of compassion and as a responsibility towards society, Lakhan buys books from his own salary and teaches children for two hours every day, without fail. Born and brought up in Bilakala village of Madhya Pradesh, Lakhan had to quit his studies at an early stage and started working to support his family. Studying only till 9th, he finally came looking for work in Gurgaon along with a relative who helped him get the job of a security guard in Sector 50. Speaking to Hindustan Times, Lakhan soon found a place to stay on rent in Sector 57 but was shocked to learn that the underprivileged children living in the colony had never been to school in their lives. "That day, I decided that I will educate them with what little I have.” Lakhan said. The children can now write their own name. Something very basic, but something that fills Lakhan and his pupils with pride. Turning the colony park into a makeshift school, Lakhan buys new books and notebooks every month and teaches the children for two hours every day. “I have always wanted to contribute toward a social cause. But I did not know how to do it and where to begin. This initiative has given me a platform where everything is defined and I know that my efforts will definitely benefit the children,” Lakhan told Hindustan Times. We think it's the financial aid that these children need, but it's really a little push and a support system from the educated people that'll go a long way in helping the underprivileged. Incredible work by Lakhan Athya - we hope this inspires us to start making a difference as well.
