Remembering Captain Vikram Batra, PVC – The Bravest Of Them All

For the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, laying down their lives is a very real possibility. But the bravery of some outshines that of the others. And in making the supreme sacrifice they become immortal heroes. One such man was Captain Vikram Batra, PVC, the Sher Shah of the Kargil War. Here’s a quick fact file on one of the bravest soldiers India ever knew.

1. He came close to not joining the Army. He was selected for the Merchant Navy but gave up the idea and joined the Indian Military Academy instead.
2. Commissioned into the 13 JAK Rif, he was promoted to the rank of Captain on the battlefield itself.
3. He was only 24 years old when he made the supreme sacrifice for the nation.

4. He was nicknamed ‘Sher Shah’ for his indomitable courage, and it also doubled up as his call sign.
5. After the capture of Point 5140 he radioed “Yeh Dil Mange More” to his commanding officer, signalling the success of the mission.
6. Another of his famous quotes is, “Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolour, or I will come back wrapped in it. But I will be back for sure”. His body did come back wrapped in the Tricolour.
