Satellite Maps Show Just How Many Indian Villages Received Electricity In The Last 23 Years And Theyre Awesome!

Electricity has become a necessity for life, but unfortunately, it isn't available for billions of people in remote areas worldwide. Nightlights.io is an initiative that monitors the progress of electricity in every country by studying the nightlights around the world. It does so with the help of data compiled by over 1300 satellites in space over a span of twenty years. Each night, four billion light signals on Earth are monitored. This is especially so for lesser developing and developing nations where the rate of electrification is not very high.

The Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) has taken pictures of Earth every night from 1993 to 2013. It focuses on 600,000 villages in India and each spot on the map displays the light output of a specific village at a specific point in time.

According to the map, many remote parts of India have been electrified. However, the intensity and time of availability are not completely comparable to that of urban areas. States bordering India's neighbours still do not have electricity due to their remote location and vulnerability.

“This visualization will be a powerful tool to supplement the Indian government’s efforts to ensure rapid electrification,” said Onno Ruhl, the World Bank’s Country Director for India.
