While on duty on the icy heights of 17,500 feet in the Kargil sector, Sepoy Vijay Kumar K and another colleague were washed away when a mild earthquake triggered an avalanche at 22:45 on March 17. Vijay Kumar was on surveillance duty that fateful night. Rescue operations were launched immediately and his colleague was soon found. Unfortunately, Sepoy Vijay Kumar wasn't as lucky. After three days of intensive search operations, the army sources confirmed that the soldier's mortal remains were discovered under 12 feet of snow.
