Support Worker Takes A Smoke Break With Shopping Bags Stacked On Her Wheelchair-Bound Patient

Charlotte Shaw, a resident of Leicester City in the UK, spotted a worker from the charity Mencap taking a smoke break while chatting on her phone. Beside her was a vulnerable man, presumably in her care, on a wheelchair with shopping bags stacked on top him. The look on his face was evidently that of discomfort. She immediately posted it on Facebook and it went viral from then on.

The post enraged carers and people in need of special care alike:

Mencap, a charity based in the UK that works with people with learning disabilities, recently released this statement:

We are appalled by what is happening in the picture. After seeing it we immediately took action, and have suspended the support worker in question and reported the issue to the relevant local authority safeguarding team. We take the wellbeing of the people we support extremely seriously, and we expect and train our staff to deliver high quality care and support services. What we see here would fall well below that standard. Our priority now, as always, is ensuring that we offer the highest quality of care to our beneficiaries so they live the lives they choose.

They claim the man on the wheelchair was unable to comprehend the situation. We just hope people in need of special care are never treated like this again.
