The Youngsters At Kashmir University Just Found The Perfect Canvas To Express Their Emotions

The Chinar has been a symbol of Kashmir's beauty. The students of the Institute of Music And Fine Arts at Kashmir University chose a 50-ft long Chinar tree that was set aside to be sold off as dead wood, as a canvas to express their emotions. The result is marvelous! The students have converted the tree into a Sight Specific Art project, covered it with newspaper and have been painting on it for the past six years. The tree has been used as a part of several art forms including papier mache. If the chinar is not removed by authorities then a new installation will take the place of the current one in the next six months. Students seem to be excited at the prospect of having something new to look forward to on the chinar tree.

“The installation has given these students an idea of the so-called contemporariness of things, which is perhaps very normal in other colleges. But things like this are seen as radical in Kashmir, given the context of state surveillance and suppression,” Showkat Katjoo, a faculty member associated with the project, told mediapersons.

The project is located at Naseem Bagh, on the western shore of the Dal Lake, which is the oldest Mughal Garden in Kashmir.

Naseem Bagh, located on the western shore of Dal Lake, is said to be the oldest Mughal gardens in Kashmir. It is much adored for its magnificent Chinar trees some of which were planted long before Emperor Jahangir laid out the Shalimar Garden in Srinagar. Legend has it that Mughals used to nurture the Chinar saplings with milk and honey and had, at a point, nearly 1,000 Chinar trees in these gardens.
