What These Ants Do To Defend Their Colonies Is Actually Pretty Freaky

When you think of an ant that can spray corrosive acid out of its butt while trying to protect its colony from predators, do you automatically assume that it lives in Australia? Even though this train of thought is accurate (since we all know that the world's creepiest critters tend to thrive Down Under), this bizarre ant species doesn't call Australia home. Wood ants hail from Europe and parts of North America. If you happen to share your neighborhood with these fearsome bugs, stay away. They'll go to bizarre lengths to protect their homes. I guess ants are better than snakes and spiders. But then again, snakes and spiders don't typically spray acid at me when I get too close.
