WhatsApp Newly Introduced End-To-End Encryption Might Just Make It Illegal In India

As part of making communication more secure, WhatsApp had earlier this week rolled out end-to-end encryption. But the move may have inadvertently made the app illegal in India. In India, according to the 2007 rule issued by the Department of Telecommunication, private companies can use encryption upto 40-bits. If they want to go beyond the set limit, they need to seek permission from the government. In case of WhatsApp, it encrypts the messages using a 256-bit key which is way higher than the set limit.

Even though the government is yet to pursue action against WhatsApp, it had in the past gone after other companies including BlackBerry over encryption policy.

India is also one of the biggest markets for WhatsApp with around 100 million active users.
