Wife And In-Laws Kill Bareilly Man After He Was Diagnosed HIV Positive

The in-laws of a 40-year-old man, conspiring with his wife, allegedly killed him while he was staying with them, after they came to know he had been diagnosed as HIV positive. The man was undergoing counselling at the local ART centre and had gone to his in-laws' at Bhojipura tehsil after completing a session. The victim, a truck driver and resident of village Khamariya, was married to a woman of Atta Patti in 2013. He took ill one-and-half years ago and started living with his in-laws. Police investigation revealed that the victim had been diagnosed with AIDS, which he, fearing stigma, kept as secret. He also started undergoing counselling at a local Anti-Retro Viral Therapy (ART) centre. On Wednesday, the man was found dead under mysterious circumstances. His wife and in-laws failed to provide any satisfactory reason behind his sudden death. Moreover, instead of informing the local police they informed the victim's family and started making preparations for his cremation.

When his family reached his in-laws' house in the afternoon, they noticed injury marks on the body of the victim, after which they informed local police.

The post-mortem report which was received on Thursday stated that the man had been strangulated to death. A case was lodged against the victim's wife, father-in-law and two others. Talking to TOI, inspector Bhojipura police station J P Yadav said, "From the statement of the victim's family, it has become apparent that his wife and father-in-law were unable to bear the stigma of keeping an AIDS patient in their house, which perhaps may be the reason behind his murder. We have lodged a case under section 302 (murder) against the wife and father-in-law of the victim along with two others. No arrests have been made yet."
