Yet Again! 12-Year-Old Nagpur Boy Launches Agitation Against Heavy Schoolbags

A 12-year-old boy has decided to take up a 'weighty' cause. He has initiated an agitation against heavy school bags. The Nagpur boy, Rugved Raikwar, began his agitation at city's Sanvidhan Chowk on October 2. With government taking no cognizance of his plea to ensure stringent execution of high court directives of keeping the weight of schoolbags less than 10% of the body weight of the student, Rugved selected Gandhi Jayanti to launch his agitation.

A student of Vidyaniketan School in Chandrapur, Rugved had earlier addressed media reporters at Chandrapur press club to share the plight of school students who are required to carry umpteen number of books to school every day.

Now, he has launched a sit-in at the hub of the city to highlight the plight of students across the nation and the health hazards it entails for them like backaches, spondylosis, neck pain and other orthopedic problems.

The young activist said that he has already written to Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis seeking intervention in the issue.

"Rugved Raikwar goes to a CBSE school. Therefore, we cannot exercise any authority and dictate terms. CBSE decides what books to prescribe to affiliated schools. We have no say in that. Rugved is a child and we are worried about him. I have directed my local officials to immediately visit the spot and get in touch with him. We will listen to what he has to say and do the best possible from our side," Maharashtra education minister Vinod Tawade said.
