24 Of The 66 Accused Convicted In 2002 Gulbarg Society Massacre Here Everything You Need To Know About The Case

After nearly fourteen years a special court in Ahmedabad has convicted 24 of the 66 accused in the 2002 Gulbarg Society massacre case. The court has also acquitted 36 of the accused in the case. This include Bipin Patel, a BJP councillor who was accused of being part of the mob which attacked the housing society. Of the 24 convicted in the case, 11 have been convicted of murder while 13 have been found guilty of other charges. Their sentences will be pronounced on June 6.

69 people, including former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, are believed to have been killed. There were allegations that Jafri had called up Modi on phone seeking help but he refused.

Thirty-nine bodies were found while 31 people including Jafri and 14-year-old Parsi boy Azhar Mody went missing. Seven years later, 30 of the missing were declared dead. The one left, Muzaffar Shaikh, was found alive in 2008.

In 2008 the Supreme Court setup a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by former CBI chief RK Raghavan to look into the incident after complaint by Zakia Jafri that the police did not register FIRs against Narendra Modi and six others.

It submitted the investigation report on May 14, 2010 stating that there was no proof to substantiate the allegations.
