Sarpanch Of A Karnataka Village Literally Begs People To Install Toilets And The Tactic Is Working

Srinivas Karturi, a Karnataka village sarpanch is really intense about PM Modi’s 'Swachh Bharat' campaign – he’s begging locals to install toilets and not defecate in public. Karturi is infamous for falling at the feet of villagers, and requesting: "I fall at your feet and request you to build a toilet please”, he says. Many are shocked or embarrassed, but locals believe that the tactic is working. If they can’t afford one, he says, he promises sponsorship, in his bid to make his village open-defecation free by 2016-17. Despite 2100 families living in this village, only 441 have their own toilet. The rest go to the fields to defecate, a source of disease. The Swachh Bharat Mission, part of the ambitious set of reforms envisioned by the Modi government aims for public cleanliness, waste management and completely ending open defecation in villages by 2019.
