Flipkart Claims Your Card Information Is 100% Safe, But Their CEOs Email Just Got Hacked, Hackers Demand Rs 53 Lakhs!

E-commerce giant Flipkart lodged a police complaint after its CEO Binny Bansal's official email account was hacked and two emails were sent from it to the company's CFO asking for a transfer of $80,000 (Rs 53,30,000). Cyber crime department is calling it a case of email spoofing, wherein messages are sent from forged addresses. Sources in CID have said that the emails were sent using a proxy from Hong Kong and Canada through a server in Russia. The same email was also sent to Sanjay Baweja, CFO of Flipkart, at 11.33am on March 1. Surprised by the nature of the emails and their timing, Baweja cross-checked with Bansal, only to find out that they were a fraud. The hackers seem to have used an advanced virus to hack into the email account. Both emails were sent at the same time using a server in Russia," CID sources said. SN Shivagangaiah, an employee with Flipkart, filed a complaint on Bansal's behalf with the CID's Cyber crime cell on Wednesday. Hemant Nimbalkar, IGP, CID-cyber cell, said he is forming a special team to investigate the case. "It is a clear case of email fraud. We request internet users not to react immediately to emails seeking money transfers and other monetary benefits," he said. How can we expect Flipkart to keep our credit card information safe when they can't even keep its CEO's email safe? Flipkart did not respond to several calls from TOI.
