Haryana Bride Sets New Example For Gender Equality, Rides Mare To Her Wedding

In a historic first, in a Haryana village, Mamta, a 25-year-old teacher, broke the stereotype and performed the Ghudchadi by riding a mare on her wedding. The ritual is usually performed by the groom. Mamta accompanied by her family took out the procession till her uncle’s house on Thursday. “She is special to me, even more than my two sons. Grooms ride mares at marriages as a mark of responsibility. I have brought up my daughter like a son and she is capable to take on all responsibilities. I am so happy", said Mamta's father Banwari Lal. Mamta said she was thankful to her family who let her perform the ritual. Taking inspiration from the move, many in the village also pledged to continue the practice.
