Karnataka HC Dismisses PIL Seeking Ban On Putrajeevak Beej Ramdev Medicine That Promises A Male Child

Even as Divya Putrajeevak Beej, the health supplement manufactured by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurveda, continues to be under the scanner of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) for its claims, the Karnataka HC has refused to ban it. The HC on Monday dismissed a PIL which sought a ban on the medicine. The petitioner, SS Ravishankar, had sought a ban on it, claiming that the product was misleading as it promised that by consuming the medicine, a woman can conceive a male child.

However, the Additional Solicitor General Prabhuling K Navadgi informed the court that according to the Ayush ministry, the medicine in question has nothing to do with the guarantee of having a male child and is, in fact, prescribed for improving the menstrual cycles in women.

This is not the first time the Putrajeevak Beej has run into legal trouble. In February Uttarakhand Health Department had said the product was in "utter violation" of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act 1994.

After it was marred with controversy, Patanjali claimed that it never promised that consuming the medicine would guarantee a male child.
