23-year-old motorcycle mechanic Mithu Das was beaten to death in front of the police by a mob of over 50, armed with weapons. He was lynched at Dengaon in central Assam’s Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border on Sunday, in front of 3 policemen who were reportedly on the site. Locals say that the police did not attempt to rescue him, The New Indian Express reported. Not only did they attack him, but they even put salt on his wounds. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Debojit Deuri told the newspaper that it was a "brutal murder", and have also made two arrests. According to allegations, Das had raped a tribal girl last month. “We have received an FIR lodged by the girl’s family in which it was alleged that the man had raped her. We are investigating the case,” Deuri said. While they stand accused of inaction.
