Golden Temple Leads The Way Again, Now Only Serves Organic Langar. PS: Its Yummier!

The famous langar hall in Golden Temple, Amritsar, is now preparing organic food to be served to pilgrims. Over one lakh devotees partake in community service at the holy shrine, where they come together to cook in the community kitchen to feed the hungry.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is hopeful that the initiative will motivate other gurdwaras to follow suit and serve organic food on their plates as well. Even though the supply of naturally grown veggies and dals is yet to be raised, the SGPC is planning to increase the same soon. Currently, the shrine receives only 10 quintals every 3-4 days.

As reported by The Hindustan Times, SGPC additional secretary Daljit Bedi said, "In January, we started serving organic carrot, radish, spinach, and cabbage as part of langar. The purpose is to serve devotees food that is chemical-free."

The organic produce comes from the seven-acre land attached to the Gurdwara Gurusar Satlani Sahib where the first seeds were sown nearly 18 months ago. The committee is planning to start sowing organic wheat and fruits for their organic langar as well.

SGPC is also planning to seek expert advice from Punjab Agro Industries Corporation Limited so as to have the reach of their organic food increased.
