A Kerala Church Denied Burial Of Priyanka Chopras Grandmother Because She Married A Hindu

Last few days were pretty tough for Priyanka Chopra since she lost her grandmother. The 94-year-old passed away in Mumbai on Friday, and Priyanka, her mother Madhu, brother Sidharth flew to Kottayam to attend her funeral. PC's maternal grandmother Madhu Jyotsana Akhauri (Mary John), is a Malayali from Kottayam. Her grandmother had expressed a desired to be buried at the St John's Attamangalam Church in her hometown, Kumarakom but the church authorities blatantly denied permission for the funeral. Church's reasoning of denying permission was because she had had married a Hindu. A spokesperson for the church told media: "She had broken ties with the church post her marriage to a Hindu, and she lived as a Hindu. One is automatically disowned by the church under such circumstances. She could have re-joined the church while alive. But once a person is dead, we cannot accept the body for burial." The funeral was then conducted at St Thomas Jacobite Church at Ponkunnam.
