Manipur Insurgency Resurfaces, 17 Jawans Killed In Ambush Near Chandel

17 jawans belonging to the 6 Dogra regiment of the Indian army were killed in an ambush on their convoy in Chandel district of Manipur. The convoy was headed from Motul towards Imphal and was ambushed using Improvised Explosive Device (IEDs). The attack seems to be the work of an unidentified insurgent group, but authorities suspect the role of NSCN(K) or UNLF which are notorious in the region. The injured jawans have been airlifted and army reinforcements have been deployed in the area. Manipur has been under the Armed Forces Special Powers act since 1958 when the insurgency began. The state has been volatile ever since with allegations of human rights violations against insurgents as well as the army. The attack comes a day after Chandel district was shut down following the alleged killing of a woman by troops of the Assam rifles. Source: WN.com
