What These IIT-Indians Are Doing To Support Rural Education Will Warm Your Heart

The high amount of discarded paper and the sad state of education in rural areas has inspired 17 B-Tech students from IIT-Delhi to participate in a pioneering eco-friendly project to help the sad state of rural schools in the country. The team in association with resident welfare associations (RWAs) collects waste paper from Delhi neighborhoods and corporate offices in Gurgaon and Noida to have it recycled into notebooks. Currently 1000kg of waste paper produces about 700 notebooks at a small margin.

It doesn't just end here, the team wants to venture into the production of desks made from discarded cardboard cartons after a man in Mumbai produced a prototype, that can be folded into a schoolbag. It is being used by Aarambh, an NGO based in Navi Mumbai, unfortunately the material is weak and non water-resistant.

The notebooks are sold at Rs. 5 each while the team is developing a school kit made of other recyclable materials. We hope this endeavor makes a difference to the lives of children who are not blessed with the privilege of a wholesome education.
