Why Our Generation Needs To Introspect A Little More And Worry A Little Less

Why can’t we think beyond our life? Why does our life suck more than others? Why are our heartbreaks worse than what most people go through? Why are our problems worse than those of third world countries? Why? Have you ever wondered? Our concept of the world Because we feel our tiny little world has only us in it. And the problem here is not the word 'us', but the word 'only'. We think our heartbreaks are worse than a war. The way our love story ended is worse than all the terrible stories we’ve heard or seen. It’s worse than climate change making headlines. It’s even more dreadful than Syrian refugees looking for shelter. 'He walked away, leaving me behind because this is what was destined to happen with me'. The way we express this self pity makes us sound as if we’ve seen millions of years, and seen the world change. And been dealt the absolute worst card. The conversation then moves to what we deserve. And we are all convinced that we deserve better than most people. We are quick to judge if that random classmate from school deserved a package of 10 lakhs per annum or not, or whether that ugly-fat-bitch deserves the good looking husband she recently tied the knot with. They don’t deserve anything - and we'll go to any extent to judge them, to pick on them, and to gossip about them.

But we?

We deserve it all. We want everything beginning from the SUV, the snazzy job after which people go drinking every day, fancy expensive clothes, lots of success and a good love life.

We live in an illusion that we are the decision makers of the world and it’s our basic right to be happy. Happiness is a destination for us and probably the toughest thing to achieve. We’ll do anything for it. We’ll play victims. We’ll cry if need be, we’ll embrace silence to be heard and we’ll act for as long as it gets us attention. That’s all we want, and that’s all we know best.

Because happy is what we want to be, but what we hardly ever get to be.

The need for introspection

It takes almost nothing to put us down. A few pictures of people on Facebook, and we’re convinced that their life is way more happening than ours. Technology is helping us crib more, rant more and suffer more. We want to be the first ones to block the exes, and the first ones to update our relationship status the moment we find someone new. We have to have the upper hand because terrible things may happen otherwise. Hell, the world might end!

No one gets our generation. No one appreciates our talent. We are ill treated at the workplace where we are exposed to a lot of pressure, the sort of pressure even the president won’t have in his life. We are the people who have it in them to change the world, to bring the next big startup idea. It’s us.

We offer explanations for not being humble enough. Our argument is that the world is a terrible place, and we haven’t met humble people either. We can’t be nice because wearing our heart on our sleeve will only hurt us. It’s a dirty world, and we know how it works. So why even make that tiny little effort to be better?

We know everything too well too. We know how things work. We are street smart. We know how to convince people. We've got our game right, we can play, we can compete and we can win. We can do it all in a single second. No doubt.
