These Beautiful Homes Blur The Line Between Indoors and Outdoors.

1. Rolling Disc Housing

There’s a reason why homes have traditionally shirked the circle. Objects that are round have a tendency to move, which isn’t so great when you arrive home to find your abode isn’t there anymore. But that hasn’t stopped DO Architects from developing 12 experimental family homes in Lithuania.
The development, called simply Rolling Homes, is set on a lagoon and canal system near the Baltic Sea. Each house is perfectly spherical, clad in wood strips with huge panes of glass sealing either side.

The premise behind these radical designs is to offer an “uninterrupted connection” to nature. Each of the three stories inside has clear views of the water in front and the wispy grasslands behind.

The ground floor features the basic living spaces with typical amenities like the kitchen and washing facilities. Upstairs are two mezzanine levels, one slightly smaller than the other.

The facade at the rear of the property has an instep to accommodate a small terrace area that is still secluded from neighbors while being exposed to the elements. Despite only having 1,000 square feet of internal space, the design of the house cleverly utilizes the properties of an arch, which mean there is no need for internal supporting beams.

While there isn’t any word on whether these rolling homes will become a reality, it does demonstrate that our assumptions on what shapes our homes should be might need updating.

2. Rethinking Housing

DO Architects have challenged conventions on how — and in what shape — a house should be built. These 12 homes are all perfectly spherical, with only a small flat base keeping them steady on the ground.
Each home has a front and rear facade made completely from glass to provide uninterrupted views of the surrounding grasslands and canals that are common in the region.
