Lucca, a 12-year-old war dog enlisted with the US Marine Corps, has been honoured with the highest bravery award after she lost a leg while serving on a mission in Afghanistan. The German Shepherd - who has successfully completed 400 missions with the Marine Corps - was awarded the Dickin Medal, the highest honour for war animals. Lucca was presented with the medal at Wellington Barracks in London on Tuesday.
Miraculously, Lucca made a full recovery and retired to California where she found a home with her former handler, Gunnery Sergeant Chris Willingham.
Willingham said in a press release:
"Lucca is very intelligent, loyal and had an amazing drive for work as a search dog. She is the only reason I made it home to my family and I am fortunate to have served with her.
"Even when Lucca was injured, her good temperament and gentle nature never faltered.
"She has become an inspiration to everyone she meets and I am so very proud to see her decorated with this prestigious award."
What a brave, brave girl!
