Thought Diwali is celebrated only in India? Well, Hindu communities all over the world celebrate the festival of lights with much pomp and enthusiasm. Take a look at what festivities are like in other countries and how similar (or different) they are to those in India.
Diwali is known as ‘Tihar’ and carries on for a period of 5 days. Each day is dedicated to a God who may take the form of an animal or an element of nature. Surprisingly the fourth day of Diwali is dedicated to death though the atmosphere is not depressing and solemn. Bhai Dhooj marks the last day as girls bless their brothers for prosperity.
The island of Bali is the only part of Indonesia where Hinduism is widely practiced and ancient temples built in the traditional Balinese style witness devotees from all over. Light is of course a big part of the celebrations as floating lanterns and fireworks illuminate the sky.
